BIOGRAPHY

Kerryon Johnson is a former NFL running back and current Running Backs Coach at East Tennessee State University, bringing elite playing experience, strong leadership, and a passion for athlete development to the collegiate level. Known for his dynamic playing style and football IQ, Johnson now channels his energy into mentoring the next generation of student-athletes.

A native of Madison, Alabama, Johnson rose to national prominence as a standout at Auburn University. During his junior season in 2017, he rushed for over 1,300 yards and 18 touchdowns, earning SEC Offensive Player of the Year honors and helping lead the Tigers to the SEC Championship Game and a Peach Bowl appearance. His physicality, versatility, and work ethic made him one of the top running backs in the country.

Johnson was selected in the second round of the 2018 NFL Draft by the Detroit Lions, where he became the franchise’s first 100-yard rusher in nearly five years. He played multiple seasons in the NFL with the Lions and Philadelphia Eagles, gaining valuable experience at the highest level of the sport.

Now on the sidelines, Coach Johnson brings a player’s perspective and a coach’s discipline to his role at ETSU. He is passionate about teaching the technical, mental, and personal aspects of the game, helping young athletes grow both on and off the field. His journey—from high school stardom to the NFL and now college coaching—serves as a powerful example of resilience, humility, and lifelong learning.
