Nyla Johnson was named the 6th all-time Head Women’s Basketball Coach at Vincennes University in 2025, bringing a decade of coaching experience across the high school, NJCAA, NAIA, and NCAA levels. A Huntsville, Alabama native, Johnson most recently served as an Assistant Coach at NCAA Division I Belmont University, where she helped lead the Bruins to a 26-13 season and a runner-up finish in the inaugural Women’s Basketball Invitation Tournament (WBIT). At Belmont, she was instrumental in developing perimeter players, implementing a strong defensive system, and contributing to a nationally ranked mid-major recruiting class.
Johnson’s coaching journey includes roles at Birmingham-Southern College, Temple College, and Alabama A&M University—where she served as both an Assistant Coach and Recruiting Coordinator. During her time at Alabama A&M, she helped the Bulldogs achieve one of their most successful seasons in over a decade, finishing second in the SWAC. At Temple College, she helped produce two WBCA All-Americans and led the team to back-to-back top-three finishes in the NTJCAC.
A former standout player, Johnson played collegiately at Faulkner University, earning SSAC Freshman of the Year honors and helping the team to a conference championship and NAIA National Tournament berth. She ranks in the top ten in school history in both points and rebounds and was honored with the Champions of Character Award in 2015. Her playing career began at Madison Academy, where she was a three-time All-State selection and led her team to an AHSAA 3A State Championship.
Johnson is known for her commitment to developing student-athletes both on and off the court. Her leadership style emphasizes character, academic excellence, and community engagement—values that align with the rich tradition of the Lady Trailblazers program.
